{"id":1708,"date":"2014-01-28T13:16:34","date_gmt":"2014-01-28T20:16:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.clarkjudge.org\/?p=1708"},"modified":"2014-01-28T13:16:34","modified_gmt":"2014-01-28T20:16:34","slug":"more-on-walt-disney-hughhewitt-com-01-27-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clarkjudge.org\/wordpress\/2014\/01\/28\/more-on-walt-disney-hughhewitt-com-01-27-14\/","title":{"rendered":"More on Walt Disney | HughHewitt.com | 01.27.14"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Usually my columns stand by themselves.\u00a0 This one is an exception.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hughhewitt.com\/defending-mr-disney-clark-judge\/\">It is a follow-on to last week\u2019s, which concerned Meryl Streep\u2019s charge that Walt Disney was anti-Semitic, as well as discriminating against women in hiring and promotion. \u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Among other things, I said that, \u201cDisney had numerous Jewish friends, business associates and employees, supported a number of Jewish charities and in 1955 was named the Beverly Hills B\u2019nai B\u2019rith\u2019s Man of the Year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I added, \u201cIt happens that some of those friends, business associates and employees were the parents of friends of mine.\u201d I repeated stories they told me about their parents\u2019 admiration for Disney and that none had detected in him the slightest sign of anti-Semitism.<\/p>\n<p>The column generated a number of comments from friends who saw it.\u00a0 Two had their own observations through parents and friends who knew Disney.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy parents went to school with [Walt Disney] at McKinley High on the south side of Chicago after the turn of the century. \u00a0I saw some of his student illustrations in their yearbook. \u00a0He was well liked by everyone, and this high school had lots of Jewish kids [including the writer\u2019s parents]\u2026. \u00a0He did an ink drawing of a \u2018dreadnaught\u2019\u2014a huge ship caught in a storm at sea. \u00a0This came from a young kid, but it was amazingly accurate and detailed. \u00a0It wasn\u2019t hard to predict from this the kind of talent that emerged later in the movies. \u00a0He moved away from Chicago a year later, I believe around 14<b>.<\/b>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The kinds of attitudes of which Streep accused Disney are typically inculcated early in life and come out in young associations.\u00a0 The point here is that they did not show themselves in young Walt.<\/p>\n<p>Still more directly addressing Steep\u2019s charge, which concerned Disney as an adult, was this comment from a friend who grew up in Beverly Hills.\u00a0 He wrote:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a friend [of his parent\u2019s generation] who financially bailed out Walt when bankruptcy was eminent. \u00a0As appreciation Disney offered both [of the man\u2019s] boys work for life. \u00a0One took the offer;
